I’ve been in a little bit of a rut lately, I seem to go through this for about a week each month, my wife calls it my “man period”. Apparently, this happens to a lot of guys. If not, then just humor me and let me believe it.
For some reason this cycle, I can’t seem to shake it off. Maybe it’s the travel catching up, the summer heat and the long days. Maybe this is what getting older is, I sure hope not.
Lately when I get back to my hotel, the last thing I want to do is write or go to the gym. It is a struggle to get motivated to go, sometimes I make it just a couple times a week. I’ll just sit in my room and watch the same SportsCenter a few times, what a waste of time.
A few days ago I was reminded of something that I stopped doing. I think that has a lot to do with how I’ve been feeling. I wanted to share this with you, because maybe you are in the same rut.
I was standing in a DFW security line, just looking down at my phone like everyone else. Robotically following the guy in front of me as I went through NFL and Summer League NBA news. Filler stories for the summer that have no real effect on my day.
All the sudden I hear this robust rhythmic voice, almost like a singing, up in front of the line. The lady whose job is to go over the rules for the security check, was singing out and dancing around. She was probably early sixties; I’m sure just working to pass the time. She was awesome. I put my phone in my pocket and couldn’t help but smile as I watched her give a guy in line a hard time about what they might find in his bag.
“You better have no more than 3oz in your bag! You know we’re gonna get you. You know everyone’s gonna see what you got in that bag!
The guy laughed and threw his hands in the air. “You got me!”
She had something nice to say to every person in line. “You’d better take them shoes off, hide ‘em in that basket, cause you know I’m gonna try an take ‘em. They’d really make this TSA outfit pop!” she said to a young woman in line.
This singing TSA lady made my day. I’m sure she made everyone’s day. I hope to get to see her again soon. It was great to see an employee having fun at work. That should be a boring job, just saying the same four or five things over and over again, but she made it look great.
It dawned on me on my flight; I have been forgetting to have fun at work. I am usually that guy singing out things at work and trying to brighten everyone’s day. I used to come up with contests with the prize being a star sticker that read “you did your job!” One time I got to work at five a.m. and put up 5,000 post it notes in my friend’s office. It took over five hours but was worth every minute. He has an amazing mustache so naturally, I spelled out “Mustache” in blue.
Somewhere along the line I had stopped having fun and the singing TSA lady reminded me how powerful it is. Having fun at work and enjoying what you do will not only make your customers happier by being around you, you will undoubtedly become more effective and more profitable.
I say this a lot, but it is so important to make conscious decisions about how we act. Being happy is a choice we must make, and expressing that happiness to others is the best way to celebrate that choice. Our attitude is very contagious, both good and bad, and when you are having fun and enjoying your day like the singing TSA lady, you better believe that catches like wildfire.
Go have fun today.
